Decision-making under AI · three-day courseUnclassified · August 2026

Training the human in the loop.

Staff officers and NCOs are being handed generative AI planning tools faster than anyone has written a standard for checking their output. This course teaches the check, measures whether each warfighter ran it, and hands the command the evidence. It was designed against III Armored Corps’ published record and stated focus areas — PhantomX and a data-centric corps, training by intent, and Warfighter 25-4.

3 days1 instruction, 2 simulation
16–25Warfighters, six desks
31.5%Accuracy with a wrong advisor
45.8%Accuracy with no AI at all

The finding the course is built on. Those two figures are from a Wharton study of 1,372 people. Participants consulted the advisor just as often on the rigged problems as the sound ones, so they were not sensing the traps, and the trait that best predicted missing a wrong answer was trust in AI.

The gap

DoD Directive 3000.09 requires appropriate levels of human judgment. The Department’s own explanation concedes that appropriate admits no single standard, and the AI ethical principles stop at five adjectives. No published DoD or Army guidance says what anyone on the staff must check before signing machine-drafted product, or how much checking is enough.

Meanwhile GenAI.mil passed a million users within two months of launch. Fielded tools, unwritten standard.

What the course does

  • Day one. Decision science taught on MDMP steps — mission analysis, COA development, the wargame, the running estimates.
  • Days two and three. A corps staff runs a crisis simulation with an AI advisor on every desk. It is deliberately wrong some of the time. Every query and response is recorded.
  • The last half-day. The room argues with its own record, while it is still fresh.

What the command gets

  • A record per warfighter. Who consulted the advisor and when, whether the base order was opened before or after, which checks ran, and confidence set against correctness.
  • The staff pattern. Which step the room let go of first, and which output nobody challenged.
  • A draft AI-use standard written by the cohort, since no published one exists.

Why this vendor

  • Seen from both chairs. Ten years as a participant in U.S. military wargames as a Navy Reserve officer, and several years designing and running crisis simulations for graduate students at Georgetown University. Sixteen written participant reflections are published on the program site.
  • AI agent agnostic. No vendor, model or version named in anything taught, so the habit survives the tool being replaced.

How to classify it

This is education and training services, not an IT or software buy. NAICS 611430, PSC U008. No software is licensed or delivered, nothing is installed on a government network, no government data is ingested, and no authority to operate is required. The exercise runs in a browser on our own unclassified infrastructure, and on paper if the network is down.

Try it before deciding anything

The program page carries a five-minute walkthrough needing no sign-in, and a fifteen-minute experiment that puts a warfighter through seven staff problems with an advisor wrong on three of them. Every section takes a keep, change or cut mark that comes back to us.
